Video Card blues

Alright, I'm writing here as a last ditch effort. I'm about ready to toss my pc into traffic so maybe someone here can save it.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop, and through Dell's infinite wisdom they have an integrated graphics setup. My pc only has PCI slots, no AGP here, so I bought a Vision Tek 9200 SE 128 MB PCI video card. It's an ATI chip but a Vision Tek board. I installed the Vision Tek graphics card into my PCI slot and now it shows up twice under "Display Adapters" in my Device Manager. Whats more is that there's an "Other Devices" listing for a Video Controller that the computer doesn't seem to recognize.

Do you think this might be because my integrated graphics is interfering somehow? I tried simply uninstalling the second Vision Tek 9200 SE listing under "Display Adapters" but the computer reloaded it on reboot. Here's a pic of my Device Manager:

Any ideas how to correct this display fiasco? I appreciate any advice.

Turn off the PC, remove the video card, reboot, uninstall the drivers for the video card using the ATI uninstall tool available here:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...amp;folderID=27

Read the manual on how to disable onboard graphics, turn the PC off, disable them, install the video card, turn your PC on, install new drivers

If you need more troubleshooting, either check the link above or visit this link and search:

A couple more thoughts. You might want to boot into safe mode to uninstall the drivers and you should be able to disable the onboard graphics controller from the bios. You should see a promt when you first turn your machine that says press delete or some other key to enter setup. Press that key to get into the bios. Generally it is the delete key on most newer bios.

Alright, here's an update. My PCI card is working and I've disabled my integrated graphics. Everything seems to be fine and dandy, thanks jsgolfman. However, the only problem that remains is that my PCI card is still listed twice under Display Adapters in Device Manager. Here's a screenshot:

Any ideas as to why it's listed twice? Everything seems to be working, so I'm content, but I'm curious.

I had the same problem with my Del demension 8100.

I had a navideo card in it the later I switched too a radion card and I first un installed everthing then installed the radion card and drivers and it showed 2 devices as well but I never had any problems so I just left it alone cause computers are so touchy feelly. when it comes to that stuff.

If it is working fine you might just let it be. You could try removing the card and then uninstalling all the video drivers in safe mode. Then try a different PCI slot. Does this card have a tv tuner or any type of input because if so that could be the second driver.

Everything is working fine, except for the nagging double listing. The card doesn't have a tv tuner. I could try unloading everything and dropping it into a new PCI slot but you know what, since it's working, I think I'm just going to let it be. Sometimes you and your computer need to come to a compromise, or, more correctly, an armistice. I'll agree to let the computer list the card twice as long as it agrees to function properly. Whoever thinks computers arent' sentient or without a sense of humor hasn't tried to upgrade one.

I wouldn't worry about the double listing. I haven't had a Radeon card in a LONG time, but I remember reading somewhere that they will always show up twice in Device Manager. I will see if I can dig up a card around here and check it out. Just from reading big balls' post though it already is 2 for 2!

Hey G-Man do you remember when I was talking to you about that very same thing.
