jsgolfman
So if I were to dual boot with XP and Linux, which version should I get? Redhat, Mandrake, etc.
Rbreb13
Mandrake is probly the easiest for noobs. If your gonna dual boot though install it on a separate HDD. Easier to work with if you wanna get rid of it.
Kal
So if I were to dual boot with XP and Linux, which version should I get? Redhat, Mandrake, etc. in my experiances (and growing experiance w/linux) ive seen Mandrake being the easist to setup and get a feel for linux. remember, linux is decentralized, its just like the internet. there is no registry, and in some distros no control panel, usually u manually edit settings. things as simple as resolutions etc. because different software makes different hardware work. i use debian at the moment, really neato and efficiant stuff. only prob is i think its crashing on me becuase i dont get video in the shell or graphical. another 5 hr installation! but JSG, go for mandrake, Redhat has been losing customers and especially in the desktop market, they may not be favored by much of the linux community. since thier stances on differnet issues. its a big mess. ironically mandrake started out because redhat didn't want to bundle KDE with thier distro. the first mandrake was essentially redhat but with KDE preinstalled. now its great for noobs! so go mandrake, ive yet to try suse, i think its intermediate between beginner and expert, novice like. i gotta try it out. too bad they dont got an ISO!!!! jsgolfman
OK, so Mandrake it is. Now, which version? 9, 8.2, etc? Edited by Gman 26-Sep-2002 OK, forget that question. It's 9. So now all I got to do is get another hdd and download this huge mutha. That's gonna take forever. Eat up a lot of my on-line time. Another thing I hate about dial-up, limited hours. I used to have 300/month but they recently changed the contract to 100. That's only 3 hrs. a night, roughly. Hell, I spend that much time just checking mail. I have to use it judiciously. Rbreb13
I'd wait till you get cable. It'll take a couple years on dialup.
Kal
9 is in its beta stages, ive never used it. however you might just want to go ahead and buy a distro from the internet or something, the cd's are relatively cheap. (i forogt the link) but theyr like 5 bucks or so for cds.
Iroc
Im benefiting from this thread too, i wanted to install a linux version to mess around with it cuz im a total noob with it, im going to use vmware to section off a part of my hard disk like a virtual computer, atleast that way i can take advantage of my current hardware, rather than use a dinosaur machine for it im gonna go with mandrake, now i just need to find some more time, can i download more time ??? jsgolfman
This is not going to be for the main rig, it will be on the test machine. Flexibility is what I'm all about. And yeah, after thinking about it and looking at the dl times, I am moving towards buying it on cd. What's wrong with the lilo(installation manager, right?)? What about debian?
Rbreb13
Lilo is alright but if you're Dual booting it kinda takes over and if you uninstall Linux it stays and causes some probs. Like dougie said create the boot disk for Linux and don't install Lilo or Grub and you'll be Golden.
Bruceleeon
I agree, as a noob to linux too, I installed suse and used lilo on a dual boot system.. being new to linux after I got rid of it for non support of my video card - at the time - It took a lot of time to figure out how to erradicate lilo from my system.. but being a puzzle solver.. it eventually came to me... Kal
ive used both lilo and grub and theyr okay, i just configure lilo in the mandrake control center. (you have to do it manually in debian, which is a PIA) if you want to eradicate LIlo or Grub from your MBR, and it is a dual boot to windows. boot to your windows 2000/xp cd, go into recovery concsole. type "fixmbr" that will rewrite the MBR to goto windows only. then if you want you can format your partition that is linux or reinstall.
