what an interesting turn. Maxtor is the first company to reduce the warranty to 1 year and the whole industry followed back in 2001. Now 3 years later (funny that's the time of the warranty, coincidence:)?), with Seagate upped their warranty to 5 years, maxtor has decided to put back the warranty of their hd to 3 years. I guess sooner or later WD will follow the route. I think this is a great news for us. Hopefully it will stay like this.

To be honest, I don't see much difference between 3 or 1 years but I like the fact you got 3 years as a backup when you buy the hd. NOwaday hd is so cheap, it really doesn't matter if it is broken but it gives you a good feeling that you bought a product that's covered by 3 years or more. It gives you the confidene on the product as well as gives you a security.

Thanks seagate for this:).

I could be wrong, but I thought the reduction on hdd (wd at least) was for the non SE version. The top end models were still covered under the 3 yr plan.

you are right. In fact, I think the OEM version also cover 3 years. Most retail are only 1 year (and that's the ide version, I think SATA are 3 years). But this maxtor is all hd, so it's good news.

I've never had any trouble with any of my WD drives. For that matter, I have an IBM/Hitachi 6GB drive I have had for 6 years that still works like a charm.

My Seagate is the most reliable drive I have ever had. Dropped at least 10 times and the sucker keeps going. Its a 'Cuda'.
