Unexpected reboot in XP

My computer keeps rebooting seconds after i log off and on to another user. It's not that it's that big of a deal, but it's bugging the holy hell out of me. Do you guys know what causes that, and if you do, could you provide a step by step scheme in fixing the problem. Also, I would like to know how to stop XP from automatically running so many programs at start up.

Thank you.

Check for a virus.

www.blackviper.com has a whole list of the XP services and what can and can't be shut off or set to manual.

A word of advice though. Do 1-3 at a time, use your computer for a while and make sure everything is working properly. Then do a few more. I learned the hard way that doing a whole bunch at one time is bad.

One way to check and see if any third party services are starting is to: Select "run" from the start menu, type "msconfig" and hit "ok", click on the "services" tab, click on the "hide all microsoft services" box, whatever remains are programs that start with windows that are not part of the OS. These can be safely unchecked without harm to your PC. They may have to be started manually for other programs to run, but they will help in decreasing boot time. Also, while you are in msconfig, click on the "startup" tab, this is another listing of programs that start with windows. None of these are necessary to boot. However, and this is a big however, there are some apps in this tab that may not look familiar but are necessary for other programs to start and run. For instance, if you use fast switching for switching between users, you will see the item "tfswctrl". msconfig will also list the command to be run and the location of the file to be run. These can give you clues as to what app it is. If in doubt, leave it alone.

OR if you only ocassionaly want to bypass the startup Programs like for example you want to play a game and or dont feel confident mucking around in windows Hold down the Shift Key while windows starts and continue to hold it down until you see your desktop without an hour glass and that will prevent your Start up applications from starting up...

Try searching the M$ knowledge base. Use "user switching" as the keyword.

Turn off Fast User Switching. Reboot. Turn it back on.

Don't know if that'll work or not but worth a try.

Make sure you have all the Windows Updates. I seem to recall a non critical that had something to do with Fast User Switching. But I'm not sure.

I don't use it myself.

Found this. How much RAM do you have and how much free when you try switching?
