jsgolfman
Athlon 1600, $58. They keep dropping. One more week and I'm gonna have to get a couple.
Rbreb13
Why? Kinda slow! Unless you're gonna do some servers or something.
jsgolfman
They are plenty fast enough for a basic system. I like to build and can't afford to get a 2400 each time, besides, the cheaper the system, the easier it is to sell. The 1600 is fast enough for most people, that way you can put in better components.
Rbreb13
Gotcha! Actually that is a very good price for that speed. Heck, over 1/2 the people I know with computers would more than double their present speed with the 1600+.
Junior
With proper cooling, one could OC those chips by more than 400 MHz and higher... So in theory, it would be like getting a 1700 or 1800 for cheaper. I plan on Oc'ing a T-Bird 1.44GHz chip. (stepping AYHJA), I have heard I can get about 400 MHz more out of it. Too bad the IWill board it's going into doesn't support the Athlon XP.
Bruceleeon
I have not heard of oc's that high.. but if you get it to work.. more power to you...
Rbreb13
I have not heard of oc's that high.. but if you get it to work.. more power to you...and post the specs for how you did it and what cooling you used. That would be a very good OC. Even 300 more would be nice. But the T-birds do run very hot.
Junior
I have not heard of oc's that high.. but if you get it to work.. more power to you... Only what I have heard... and I will try too. but I don't think I can get more than maybe 200MHz which will be fine with me. Anyone got any Dry Ice
jsgolfman
I bet it's a great oc'er. I have the 1700 and got 100mHz oc out of it just by upping the fsb, soon as I get my heat spreaders on the RAM I bet I can get another 40-50 mHz. My board is a very limiting factor. No voltage, ram or pci timing adjustments(divisor). Running CAS 3 now.

Rbreb13
I've read in some other forums that the chips Newegg is selling right now are not good overclockers. In fact some people are having down right horrible luck at getting anything at all extra out of them. AGOGA or RA core or something. If I see it again I'll post it. jsgolfman
Are you talkin' just the 1600 or all of them(1700, 1800, etc.) I think my 1700 is AGOIA, could be wrong. Have to check tonight as I'm switching hsf, yet again.

jsgolfman
I was right about the heat spreaders. Got all the way up to 145 FSB, stable. 1597mHz out of the 1467mHz 1700 with no voltage adjustments. Not bad. The A7M is a stable board, probably why it has stuck around for so long. Too bad it is not more oc friendly, if it was I could maybe get another 100mHz out of it.

Kal
whilst were on the topic of newegg, just wondering how good your returns are from there? how do thier OEM processors come? (since im plannin 2 buy an OEm one from there if anything) r they good packaging and how is thier customer service?
Rbreb13
Never had to return anything to Newegg, myself. But from what I've seen around the forums they're pretty good at RMA's. As far as OEM processors I've always gotten mine from Googlgear Good service and a slightly cheaper price most of the time.
Bruceleeon
I like Googlegear also, i have also bought processors from TigerDirect. I have been satisfied with Newegg so far. Another place i like to go is 11cb.com They are prices are not the cheapest, but their service is excellent.
Kal
i get tiger direct's magazine but i think that they'r just overpriced. they have OEM processors at retail prices, in comparison to newegg. no offense or anything its just that i dont prefer tiger, newegg or googlegear seem good. googlegear actually have some good ram prices. Bruceleeon
Tiger has 17" monitors for under 90 bucks.. A lot of their stuff is overpriced... but some of it isn't... Just like anywhere else you go... The prices vary.
jsgolfman
Are the monitors refurbished? I saw some at some other joint for $84, but they were refurbished.

Rbreb13
yeah refurbished IBM though....Nothing wrong with that. I've got an IBM P200 refurb thats been good for 2 years. Ilike the fact that I got a 21" monitor for $200.
