Did you try the fix in the sticky? Were you trying to install Norton AV?
It should work, its a permissions thing.
What was the last thing you did before the error message?

Start/Run/ "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Have your XP CD handy.
Have you done all Windows Updates and Svc Packs?

Not the last thing you were doing. The last thing you installed?
Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling. Boot between each uninstall/reinstall.

Well, if you have recovery discs it sounds like an IBM, Dell, Gateway or other OEM. You don't get recovery discs if you build your own. Did you get a DIY system off the net somewhere like TIgerdirect or Newegg?
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live you life in a manner so that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.
